Details:

This isn't your ordinary free seminar. In general, when a company offers a similar free seminar, their goal is to get you to attend so they can wow you with fantastic content and get you all excited about buying their introductory course which usually costs a few thousand dollars.

There's nothing inherently wrong with that process. It generally makes a lot of money for the company (or they wouldn't keep doing it), but what about the person who bought the course? The problem is most people who buy the course never do anything with it. They just wasted their money, and in most cases they couldn't afford to lose that kind of money.

Worse yet, many companies will convince you that if you pay for the course on a credit card, you'll be able to pay off the card quickly once you've taken their course and start earning money. It almost never works that way. Even if the person does exactly what the course tells them to do, the course doesn't provide enough information for the person to be successful. If they ever do make money with their new found knowledge, it takes way longer than expected, and may never be enough to pay back the credit card debt.

One company we're aware of even teaches you how to borrow money on other people's credit cards to pay for their course, but you can bet most of the people who do this borrowing never actually pay the money back. It really borders on criminal how they set you up to fail and don't make it clear that is the most likely outcome.

Companies like these make it so easy for you to go to the free seminar in the first place and they give you the impression that everything is easy.

Well we have bad news for you...it's almost NEVER EASY!!! In almost all cases you are really talking about starting a business. When the course is on making money in real estate, it's really about starting a business that uses real estate as the vehicle to make money. When the course is on making money on the internet, it's really talking about creating a business to make money by marketing and selling on the internet. The thing is, business is way more than just 'what you do'.

When you go to work at your job, there's more than one person that works where you work. They all have different tasks to perform, and with larger businesses, there are entire departments of people doing stuff that has nothing to do with what the business 'does'. For example, Ford Motor Company makes automobiles, but most of the people who work for Ford don't have anything to do with the actual manufacturing process.

If you expect to start a business and start making money, start by answering these question: How good are you at managing the financials of a business? When's the last time you filed a corporate income tax return? Do you know anything about payroll obligations such as employer contributions to CPP and EI? Have you ever hired and managed an employee? Have you ever given a performance appraisal to an employee, provided performance management or fired an employee for not doing their job? When you are paying an employee $12 / hour, do you have any idea what the REAL cost is? Have you ever done any marketing? Do you love to sell? Do you even know the difference between marketing and sales?

These are all parts of business. If you're not really good at all these tasks (and most people aren't), then you'll have to hire people to do them for you, but now we're talking about hiring and managing people. Again, how good are you at that? When you are asking them to do something you're not good at doing yourself, do you even know how to do it? If not, how can you manage them?

The points we're trying to make are simple. Before you attend someone's free seminar and buy an expensive course with the intention of learning a new skill so you can make lots of fast easy money and quit your job:

  1. Realize you're actually looking at starting a business
  2. Know that operating a business isn't easy for most people and it can be a LOT of work
  3. Most businesses fail for many reasons, not the least of which is the person who started the business didn't really have any idea what was involved and how much work it was for so little reward

It's offensive when companies offer these free seminars and give the impression that it's going to be easy to make money if you take their course. That's why we're not making it easy for you.

When most people encounter an obstacle, they quit. In business, we guarantee you will encounter obstacles. If you don't have the will power to forge ahead when the going gets tough, then you may not want to go through all the stress and expense of starting in the first place.

This is a long page of text for a reason. By now, we've already lost many people who didn't even have the patience to read the entire page. Most of them wouldn't be successful if they were to start a business, but that's only the start. It's going to get harder.

Homework Assignment #2:
Randy Pausch was a professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He participated in their lecture series called, “The Last Lecture”. Watch the following video (1:18 Minutes) and write down what Randy says about Brick Walls:

As we mentioned, the typical format is to offer a free seminar and have people show up and listen to a long sales pitch that sounds like a high energy and entertaining training class. We are deviating from that format in two MAJOR ways. Firsf of all, we are not holding the free seminar, you are. Secondly, we won't be standing at the front of the room entertaining you, this is all hands on. You actively participate in the entire presentation. You learn more this way, you get more out of it and what you learn stays with you longer.

When we say, "You are holding the free seminar", what do we mean? It's really not as bad as it sounds. For the simplest seminar, someone has to find a place to hold the presentation, someone has to advertise the event, someone has to collect names of attendees, and someone has to facilitate the presentation (be the presenter). For our events, you will be doing all of this except the actual presentation.

Start by letting us know you want to participate. This way we can coach you through the process and track your progress. We will also connect you with others who want to attend the presentation so you can work together toward the common goal.

Homework Assignment #3:
Contact Us to let us know you want to register for the seminar, arrange to pay your $50 refundable deposit and complete the payment.

When preparing to hold the seminar, your first task will be to find other people who want to start a business and who also want to attend the seminar. You will then walk them through the process you are following here and have them register, complete the application process and pay their refundable deposit.

We won't hold the seminar until there are at least 10 attendees confirmed. To be confirmed, they have to have registered, completed the application process, paid their refundable deposit and signed up someone else who has also registered, completed the application process and paid their refundable deposit.

As you find people and get them signed up, they will help you find more people for the seminar. The people you find and get registered don't have to be friends or family. In fact, you may find it easier to sign up people you don't know. They also don't have to attend the same session of the free seminar you attend, they can attend the next time we have 10 people registered.

While you are required to sign up at least one person in order to be eligable to attend the event, you are encouraged to sign up as many people as you can. This way your event will be held sooner. Also, you will be gaining invaluable hands on experience as you do this as you are developing a really powerful business skill that you will require to operate your own business.

As an added bonus, when you sign someone up to take the class, they are joining our network and you are being recorded as the person who referred them. If, in the future, they ever buy anything through the network and there's a related referral fee, it will go to you.

To recap quickly, when you find and recruit people to attend the free seminars, you receive the following benefits:

  1. You receive invaluable real life, hands on experience in marketing, networking and sales and develop business skills that will continue to serve you as you develop your business
  2. You build your network of contacts which will help your business grow in the future
  3. You may earn referral commissions in the future from referrals you make now
  4. The more people you register for the event, the sooner it will be held and the sooner you get to attend the event
  5. While it's not obvious now, you are actually in the process of actively building your own business

(Of course you will also receive all the benefits of attending the event in addition to the above list.)

Homework Assignment #4:
To recap, your assignment is to sign up people to attend the free event, and work with people you sign up and others who have already signed up to get at least 10 people for the next free event.

Once there are at least 10 confirmed attendees, you will work together to find a place to hold the presentation. The goal is to find a place that is free or where the attendees are willing to share any minimal cost that may apply. This is a test of your ability to work together as a team to solve the problem and again it is helping you develop similar relevant business skills.

Clearly, the venue will have to be available when everyone (including the presenter) is able to attend.

Homework Assignment #5:
Find the venue where the event will be held making sure it is available when everyone is able to attend.

When all that's done, all that's left is to hold the event. In some cases you will need to arrange to pick up the presenter and drive him or her to the actual presentation. Therefore you will need to allow for this possibility

So now the big question...why are we doing it this way? The answer is simple. We are only looking for people who seriously want to start a business. When you start your own business and begin to operate it, you'll find it's MUCH more difficult than the small hoops we are requiring you to jump through here.

Secondly, when you take this approach, you are networking and meeting people. You are basically doing marketing and sales (finding people who want to buy what you are selling and selling to them). These are two major skills you will have to have if you plan to start and operate your own business.

Third, you will find most businesses fail because too many people try to do too much themselves. They don't work together cooperatively and communicate with other people in their business or in other businesses. We want you to get use to working with other people toward a common goal because this cooperative mentality is how your business will succeed. It is actually part of a much bigger picture plan that is intended to help your business grow nationally and internationally (if that is what you want for your business).

When we take this approach, we will weed out a HUGE percentage of people who might have otherwise been willing to take the free presentation, but who would never succeed in business. We feel the people who do make it to our presentations will have a MUCH better than average chance of success in their business. We'll also be finding people who think the same way we do and therefore we will more likely be able to work with them.

Will we get fewer people to our events this way? Absolutely, but we expect to get a higher success rate for those who do what it takes to attend these events. We don't want them to fail because we don't think it's morally right to set someone up to fail just because it's a more profitable business model.

A major hurdle our participants will have to deal with is rejection. For the very few who actually decide to follow this process, it will be up to them to find others who are willing to follow this process. They will experience a LOT of rejection and there will be a lot of people who try to talk them out of continuing. These two factors are what you'll experience all the time when you start your new business so we intentionally set you up to experience this early on. Again, we expect this to weed out some more of the weak.

When you get use to the fact that they are not rejecting you, they are rejecting what you are doing, you won't take it personally. This is a HUGE lesson for anyone in life, but especially for business owners.

Once you've made it through this challenge, you will have completed the first lessons of our training and you will have earned the right to hold the free seminar.

So why would you go through all this trouble just to take a free seminar? We just mentioned the first reason. The hands on learning experience is invaluable. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. When you attend our free seminar, you automatically become a free member of our network. As such, you'll be expanding your network with people of like mind who are willing to work with you cooperatively so you can all succeed together.
